Sensirion
AG aims to supply products and services that satisfy the most stringent
quality specifications. The Swiss sensor company therefore strives to
continuously improve and further develop its quality management system.
The successful certification to standard ISO/TS16949:2002 in March 2008
is an important milestone in this process. The certificate enhances the
company's October 2003 certification to standard ISO 9001:2000 and
demonstrates the progress that has been made in quality management.
Sensirion's quality management system is designed and managed by a
department specifically created for this purpose. Together with the
associated process managers, it handles the design, implementation,
monitoring and continuous improvement of standardized and reliable
business processes. An effective complaints management system ensures
that problems and complaints are dealt with quickly. It contributes
substantially to ensuring that OEM customers' value-added processes

SONUS - The smallest and lightest
ultrasonic sensors |
| |
Baumer
Electric: The new miniature ultrasonic sensor generation SONUS with
its great performance is in the focus of general interest for good
reason. SONUS, currently the most compact ultrasonic sensors on the
market, excel with their tiny housing of just 10 x 14 x 27 mm. A housing
for countless applications, particularly for installation in the
smallest spaces or for the assembly of several sensors in the tightest
places. Ultrasonic technology permits objects to be detected regardless
of their color or transparency. Due to their small mass of less than 4
grams, they are optimally suited for installation in all light,
quickly-moving handling units. However, the performance data is anything
but minute. The scanning range is astounding at 200 mm, for the
digitally switching proximity sensors and retro-reflective types and
also for the distance measuring versions with analog voltage outputs.
All three sensors have a means of electronic Teach-in ... |

Integrated humidity and temperature
sensors in clothes dryers |
| |
The
residual moisture content of laundry can be determined using the
humidity and temperature sensors made by Sensirion AG. This
enables personalized drying programs and a reduction in energy
consumption. Two market trends can currently be seen with regard to
clothes drying. The first is a demand for personalized drying programs,
while the other is the desire to reduce energy consumption. The Swiss
sensor manufacturer Sensirion recommends using its combined humidity and
temperature sensors for this purpose. As measurements have shown, these
sensors allow better monitoring of drying cycles and thus precise,
optimized control of the drying process. As a result, the efficiency of
the process can be increased and the energy consumption can be reduced.
The high temperatures and relative humidity levels in clothes dryers
impose severe demands on the sensors. Tests have shown that Sensirion’s
combined humidity and temperature sensors are robust and reliable and
have good long-term stability, ... |

Safety Sensors – Simplified and without
limitations |
| |
Specifying,
ordering, fitting and setting up light guard installations for virtually
every application are easy tasks with the new all-in-one MS28/MS48
safety light curtains from Omron Electronics. Unlike conventional light
curtain designs that make it necessary for specifiers to choose from a
wide range of potentially confusing options, the MS28/MS48 range
features a small number of products, each of which can be easily and
quickly configured by the user to suit the needs of the application in
hand. MS28 light curtains are suitable for Type 2 applications, while
MS48 products are designed for Type 4 applications, complying with EN
61946 Part 1. The series includes 14mm finger protection models, with a
maximum operating range of 7m, covering protection heights from 280mm to
1800mm. Also available are 30mm hand protection models with a maximum
range of 20m, covering protection heights from 240mm to 2120mm. ... |

Distance sensors housings get ‘processed’ |
| |
Baumer
Electric: The laser distance sensors of the series 20 product family
have a new addition! It now includes a series of OADR 20 sensors which
are characterized, in particular, by their stainless steel housing. For
the first time, they can now easily achieve IP 69K protection class
levels, making them ideal for use in the process environment. OADR 20
sensors cover the measurement ranges between 30 and 600 mm, offering a
resolution of up to 0,005 mm with a response time of less than 0,9ms.
They are available with either a dot or linear laser beam; because the
linear beam monitors a larger area it is particularly well suited to
providing reliable distance measurements to rough surfaces. Thanks to
their intelligent internal signal analysis, these sensors provide an
accurate output signal, regardless of the colour of the surface being
scanned. A simple, 2-point teach-in process allows the measurement range
to be precisely matched to ... |

Install Omron photosensors ten times as
fast! |
| |
With
their innovative SecureClick snap mounting system, the new E3FZ
photosensors from Omron Electronics are typically ten times
faster to install than ordinary square sensors, and three times faster
to install than conventional cylindrical sensors. By dramatically
reducing the time needed for installation, the new sensors provide big
cost savings, especially on large installations. The novel mounting
system used with E3FZ sensors completely eliminates the need for nuts
and screws – the sensors simply click into place in a suitably drilled
hole. Despite its speed and ease of use, however, the SecureClick
mounting system has been extensively evaluated and shown to be secure
even when exposed to high levels of vibration. Omron’s new
high-performance sensors feature the popular space-saving short-body M18
cylindrical format, and incorporate high-intensity LED light sources for
enhanced sensing range. ... |

Simplified Liquid Flow Microsensors |
| |
The
Swiss sensor manufacturer Sensirion AG is expanding its
technology portfolio for liquid flow sensor solutions. The microsensor
specialist has announced a new level of miniaturization for non-invasive
liquid flow sensors based on planar microfluidic substrates. Innovative
packaging enables Sensirion's highly sensitive thermal flow sensor
microchips to measure non-invasively through the wall of a flow channel
inside a microfluidic substrate (US Pat. 6813944). This design provides
unique sensitivity for liquid flow measurement and bubble detection in
the microliter range. The sensors are especially suitable for monitoring
flow rates and improving system performance in high-volume biomedical
applications and micro fuel cells. Non-invasive flow sensing is possible
thanks to the high sensitivity achieved with CMOSens® technology. A
small digital CMOSens® microchip (2.2 x 3.5 mm) is bonded to the
microfluidic channel substrate. Beside the sensor element it houses the
complete digital intelligence as well as ... |

Lotus Hybrid Blooms |
| |
|
Sensor
Technology Ltd: The torque-current characteristics of a combined
motor-generator developed for a Lotus-based hybrid car have been
comprehensively mapped by a TorqSense digital torque sensor. Specialist
electromagnetic design company Elektro Magnetix (EMX) of Brighton
developed and tested the motor-generator for Lotus Engineering’s
EVE(Efficient, Viable, Environmental) Hybrid. This is a technology
demonstrator that is showcasing many of the medium term solutions that
will be used to reduce vehicle emissions. Jonathan Bremner of EMX
explains that the mapping was essential, but could not be done in-house.
“We are a design house, so tend to sub-contact testing to other
organisations. With this project we needed to plot out the full range of
performance, but had only a tight time window to do all the work.” So
EMX worked with a testhouse to design a simple yet effective test rig.
It was not long before the specialist engineers had settled on using a
TorqSense torque sensor from Sensor Technology asthey could design a rig
around it very easily, and then it was very quick and simple to use. ... |

Build-up system extends force calibration
limits |
| |
HBM
has supplied the first BU18 build-up system to the Romanian National
Force Laboratory where it is used as a National Standard. The system has
a maximum capacity of 3 MN. The BU18 build-up system was developed to
measure or calibrate large compressive forces as a smaller and less
expensive alternative to existing direct loading machines. The system
comprises three precision force transducers mounted in parallel onto
which the force is distributed. The BU18 build-up system is based on
HBM’s C18 compressive force transducer because of its compact dimensions
and high accuracy; the C18 can attain an accuracy of Class 00 per ISO
376. A junction box for parallel connection of the output signals of the
three transducers is included in the scope of supply. Normally direct
loading calibration machines are used for calibrating force transducers
in national institutes and industrial calibration laboratories. ... |
