Pressure / temperature transmitter for
dual-mode engines |
| |
With
the approval of the Series 22 DT transmitter Keller AG für
Druckmesstechnik, Winterthur (Switzerland) has succeeded in moving
into the area of production engine applications that are governed by
extreme demands. So-called dual-mode vehicles have experienced a
tremendous boom due to the voluntary commitment of European car
manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by 2008. These
vehicles can be operated using normal petrol during the start-up phase
and then with natural gas during continuous operation. The combustion of
natural gas such as methane (CH4) creates 25% less CO2 than petrol with
the same engine performance. The pan-European introduction and promotion
of this dual-mode technology has forced leading manufacturers to undergo
additional system optimisation that includes exact control of the gas
pressure and highly-dynamic measurement of the gas temperature directly
at the distributor (rail). Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik has developed
the transmitters in the Series 22 DT for ... |

Metallic objects simply measured |
| |
The
distance information for the triangulation principle is obtained via the
reflection of the laser beam. Thereby, surface roughness in the sub-micrometre
range causes interference in the laser spot, whereby false measurement
results can be obtained. This physical effect is particularly
predominant in shiny objects and cannot be avoided using currently
available products on the market. Micro-Epsilon, as a specialist
in measurement technology, announces its new optoNCDT 2200LL, which also
makes reliable measurements on shiny metallic objects thanks to an oval
light spot. The point-shaped laser beam has now been widened using a
special cylindrical lens and projected onto the target. The light spot
is absorbed by a receiving array and evaluated. As the light spot is
averaged using a special software algorithm, interference is completely
filtered out. Another application area for the optoNCDT 2200LL is
structured surfaces, where the distance and not the structure itself
need to be measured. The distance information is not influenced by ... |

The
DryCheck dew point instrument has been launched by Michell
Instruments as a response to demands from customers for an accurate,
stable but economic instrument, with simple sampling system, which could
be easily installed for use in a number of dew point measurement
applications. All components are housed in a rugged IP65 rated
polycarbonate case. This can easily be wall mounted at a convenient
point close to the gas sample. A clear cover protects the display and
the sample flowmeter. Gas connection (gas in and gas out) is provided
using “quick connect” push-fittings, suitable for use with 6 mm OD
Teflon tubing. Mains power input, and connection to the 4-20 mA analogue
output, and the two user programmable voltage free relay contacts are
all easily accessible behind the lower panel. The DryCheck utilises the
Michell Instruments Easidew On-Line to measure dew point in the range
–100 to + 20*C dew point, or moisture content in the range 0-3000 ppm.
This well-proven instrument has at its heart, Michell’s advanced Ceramic
Moisture Sensor providing accurate and stable measurement. The
calibration data for each sensor is stored ... |

Melexis and CO2 footprint reductions in
the automotive industry |
| |
|
In view of the plans of the European Commision Melexis can state
that the company is ready to accomplish the needs the Commission has
pointed out in it’s draft regulation last month. The company’s
Integrated Circuits and Sensors are essential elements in the automotive
industry’s accelerated roadmap for CO2 footprint reductions and fuel
efficiency gains. The current high energy prices are structural and
driven in part by the successful economic achievements of China and
India. To offset these new consumption and emissions sources the Kyoto
Agreement signatories are all pledged to meet new efficiency targets.
These commitments are driving fuel efficiency and reduced emissions as
the top priority design targets of the world’s automotive OEM’s. The
strong shift in buying patterns has confirmed that consumers want the
most fuel efficient vehicles that meet their personal and professional
needs. The same consumers also acknowledge their responsibility to the
planet and look to honor their obligation in their choice of cars. A few
of these exciting technologies designed with Melexis ICs ... |

RoaDyn® Piezoelectric Measuring Wheels
for Extremely Small Torques |
| |
Kistler:
Aerodynamic and drive train optimization is necessary not least to meet
the increasingly stringent CO2 emissions regulations faced by today’s
vehicles. In addition to cutting fossil fuel consumption, drivers
include the high crude oil price of around 100 dollars a barrel and the
very tough new vehicles’ emissions legislation anticipated. The torque
measuring wheels of the RoaDyn P1xy series yield important information
from simulation, test stand measurement and over-the-road testing.
Minute changes in torque are investigated in the road tests. Due to the
very high dynamic range of the piezoelectric sensors, an appropriately
chosen charge amplifier range allows extremely accurate operation of the
RoaDyn P106 Type 9294B… up to three factors of ten below the mechanical
limit of its measuring range. Its sensors with piezoelectric crystals
have the following ... |
