Climate guard determines the air quality
in award-winning solar house |
| |
The
solar house of the Technical University Darmstadt has won the
prestigious "Solar Decathlon 2007" competition held in Washington D.C.,
USA to find the most attractive and energy-efficient solar house. The
house was designed and constructed by a team of students from various
departments of the university plus sponsors, including J. Dittrich Elektronic from Baden-Baden. The company equipped this passive house
with the climate guard, a network-compatible sensor system that permits
demand-controlled interior room ventilation since it measures all the
important parameters of the interior climate: the carbon dioxide content
of indoor air, relative humidity and room temperature. The carbon
dioxide is measured by means of a two-beam infrared photometer, a
precision measuring instrument that until recently was still an
expensive and high-maintenance device. Today, however, it is affordable,
robust and long-term stable thanks to a patented innovation developed by
the company. Demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) dependent on the carbon
dioxide concentration in indoor air saves energy and aids adherence to

Adhesive simply sticks strain gages |
| |
HBM’s
hot-curing EP150 epoxy resin is supplied ready for use and is applied
directly using a brush integrated in the screw cap. The adhesive can
also be sprayed in mass production applications, for example, in
transducer manufacturing. EP150 is a one-component resin unlike most
other epoxy resins that require additional time to mix different
components before they can be applied. EP150 has very low viscosity and
is very effective. Only a small amount is applied which forms a very
thin, uniform layer of adhesive that properly bonds strain gages. EP150
is used at temperatures ranging from -70°C to +150°C. Two different
packages are available: 2x30ml (1-EP150) and 10x20ml (1-EP150-GP). ... |

New OMRON colour sensor for zero-defect
production |
| |
Hoofddorp,
The Netherlands – Omron has launched a further model in its
comprehensive range of solutions for quality control and inspection. The
new E3X-DAC-S Colour (RGB) Sensor is designed for use on standard or
high-speed production lines in the food packaging, automotive,
semiconductor and electronics industries. It offers fast and easy
detection of differently coloured components or product markings: by
correctly sorting parts by colour, and by detecting incorrectly coloured
components, the new sensor can help increase production accuracy and
efficiency. Outstanding design flexibility: The new colour sensor has
been designed using the popular E3X fibre- amplifier platform, so that
it can be easily integrated into existing machine designs. The sensor
heads can be selected according to space, mounting and application
requirements, ... |

Suppression of interference radiation in
radiometric level measurement |
| |
BERTHOLD Technologies: Radiometric level measurements are
particularly reliable and have a characteristically high availability.
The technique permits non-contact level measurement and is therefore
used especially for difficult measuring tasks. Hitherto, however, the
applicability of radiometric measurements was always compromised
whenever testing of materials or welds was being performed on site. A
newly developed technology now permits the influence of interference
radiation on measurement to be drastically reduced. The very high
activity of the radiation sources used for weld testing generate such
strong radiation fields that even radiometric measurements performed at
distances of up to 1000 m can go haywire. A new technology has been
developed to prevent this from happening. An LB440-RID radiometric level
measurement system incorporating this new technology was subjected to
extensive field testing by BASF radiometry specialists at Ludwigshafen
in collaboration with Berthold Technologies in order to establish its
applicability in practice. ... |

Holdings. The SPI is compact, economical and a durable device that
is extremely easy-to-install and has four measurement ranges; 4.75,
12.5, 25, and 50 inches. The CPI is also resistant to “free release” of
the cable without damage, a significant benefit critical to many
applications. Designed for restricted space installations, the SP1
includes a handy mounting bracket that allows the cable exit to be
selected from 4, 90-degree offset positions, making it ideal for light
industrial and many OEM applications. Users will benefit from the fact
that this device has been designed for misalignment situations wherein
the cable may be pulled out and cycled at up to 45 degree angles without
compromising life. Distinctive features of the SP1 include a
polycarbonate enclosure, an operating temperature range of -40° to
+200°F, a vibration specification of up to 10G’s to 2000 Hz maximum, and
a voltage divider output signal. Electrical specifications include an

Radiation Interference Discrimination -
Radiometric measurements and weld inspections |
| |
BERTHOLD Technologies: Radiometric level gauges have proved
themselves indispensable, especially in the chemical industry, due to
their universal usage and reliability. The measurement is contact-free
and requires no changes to the vessel. They are therefore widely used,
particularly in difficult processes. Problems can occur however, when
weld or material inspections are performed at the plant site. During
these inspections very strong radioactive sources are employed,
sometimes 10,000 times stronger than the source of the measuring system.
This additional radiation field leads to a strong rise in count rate at
the detector and a seemingly dropping fill level. As a result,
considerable problems in the process can occur - in the worst case,
vessel overflow with severe consequences for plant and personnel safety.
Up to now, detectors were often covered with heavy and expensive lead
shieldings. during weld inspections Weld tests were strongly regulated
and the production was often stopped or severly hampered. ... |

Compass inclinometer |
| |
In
addition to providing NMEA magnetic heading data, these rugged modules
from Fluxgate world also provide both pitch and roll angle up to
±45º from horizontal with a resolution of 0.1º. Expected to have several
areas of application in marine control systems, a prototype self-levelling,
radar mounting platform has already been designed around the pitch-angle
sensing function. The sensors use a floating-core fluxgate magnetometer
and incorporate the company’s patented 3rd axis sensing. The compact,
low-cost sensors components are supplied separately for manufactures or
mounted on a printed circuit board with all control electronics for
systems integrators to incorporate into their own systems. They are
available with various output options – including alarm limit set
points. They can also be supplied with various rates of viscous damping
where vibration and shock loadings may be expected to affect readings.

The Finest Products in Sensor, Measuring
and Testing Technology |
| |
The
15th International Trade Fair for Sensor, Measuring, and Testing
Technology will be held from 6 to 8 May on the fair grounds in Nuernberg.
The conferences and forums complementing this worldwide biggest event is
expected to be attended by 580 exhibitors including the major technology
and market leaders of most product groups. Mechanical Parameters:
Pressure, force, and tension are the major mechanical parameters
generally detected by resistive or piezoresistive sensors. Today,
optical processes – usually based on fibre-optics, which reveal a
change in phase length or light propagation time when elongated due to
strain, for instance – are also available. Among the extraordinary
products at the SENSOR+TEST this year are sensors for monitoring
turbulences in wind channels or for detection of aerodynamic properties
of vehicles and aircraft. At a rate of rise of under 25µs, piezoelectric
transducers attain sensitivities of up to 220V/kPa. Another design, also
with ICP amplifiers, can be used for quick load tests to detect tensile,
compressive, or impact forces, for example, as occur in drop tests or
crash tests. ... |

CO2 measuring system for monitoring
indoor air quality now with relay outputs |
| |
The
patented carbon dioxide measuring system from J. Dittrich Elektronic
is now available with two independent relay outputs. As a result, the
MF420-IR-AL measuring system has direct control of automatic window
openers, air conditioning systems and fans. There is no longer any need
for an intermediate device to read and evaluate the 4-20 mA measurement
signals. Controlled interior room ventilation just got even easier. The
MF420-IR-AL measures the indoor carbon dioxide concentration with the
aid of a two-beam infrared photometer, which, thanks to a patented
innovation, is affordable, robust and long-term stable. If the carbon
dioxide concentration exceeds the guide value of 1,500 ppm CO2 specified
for interiors in ventilation standard DIN 1946-2, relay contact A sends
a short pulse, prompting the triggered device to increase the supply of
fresh air (e.g. window opens automatically or fans come on). If the
carbon dioxide concentration falls below a value of 1,400 ppm CO2, relay
contact B sends a short pulse causing the supply of fresh air to be
reduced (window closes automatically, fans go off). ... |

Spray cleans quickly for rapid strain
gage installation |
| |
Cleaning
component surfaces now takes significantly less time with HBM’s
easy-to-use RMS1-SPRAY cleaning agent. Comprising a mixture of acetone
and isopropanol the spray is used to free surfaces of dirt, grease, and
similar impurities in preparation for fitting strain gages. Cleaning
component surfaces is essential for strain gages to be properly
installed. RMS1-SPRAY enables the chemically pure cleaning agent to be
easily and reliably applied, for example, when preparing measuring
points on vertical surfaces or working overhead. By contrast,
conventional methods require filling the solvent from a storage
container into an appropriate can. Using RMS1-SPRAY directly from the
can allows significant time savings when preparing measuring points.
RMS1-SPRAY comes in packages containing five 200ml spray cans and 450
cleaning pads. ... |
