new WIKA WUC-1X UHP transducer family offers more space in
installations with ultra-pure media and special gas systems. The three
available variants – WUC-10 (single-end), WUC-15 (flow through) and
WUC-16 (modular surface mount) – are notable for their extraordinarily
compact design. Among the further outstanding features are the IP67
high-level ingress protection and the active temperature compensation.

Technology Ltd: A company that designs and build custom test
equipment for the manufacturing and research industries has developed a
cost saving sub-system that allows eight dynamometer test rigs to share
a single calibration unit based on a Digital TorqSense transducer from
Sensor Technology Ltd. The company, 1st Pass of Westbury in Wiltshire,
started out as a regional systems integrator for National Instruments’
LabView software packages. However, it quickly realised that there was a
considerable need for a wider service encompassing all aspects of test
rig design and build. Founder and Managing Director, Chris Turner,
explains: “Engineers involved in either research or quality control need
test rigs, but designing them is not their forte. They tend to focus
only on the immediate requirements so tend towards inflexible,
mono-functional designs. Six months later when new requirements emerge,

Novel CO2 Sensors for Closed Circuit
Rebreathers |

Synkera Technologies, Inc. is currently developing solid-state,
conductiometric sensors for monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2) under a SBIR
Phase I grant from NOAA. The focus of the funded work is the development
of small, low-power sensors to be included in the breathing loop of
closed circuit rebreathers that can monitor for a breakthrough of the
CO2 scrubbing system. The inclusion of a CO2 sensor in closed circuit
rebreathers will make the dive equipment safer and allow for more
widespread use. The initial SBIR effort is the development of sensors
and electronics and will be followed-up by the integration of the
sensors into rebreathers for testing of prototype units. Due to
significant cost advantages, it is anticipated that the devices will
expand CO2 sensing for applications served by currently available
technology, primarily infrared (IR) sensors, and open up new sensing
opportunities. A particular area that these novel sensors are expected
to impact is demand control ventilation (DCV). These new solid-state
sensors are expected to demonstrate performance comparable to IR sensors
currently used in cost sensitive applications. Fabrication of the
sensors in a unique surface mount geometry is ideal for integration with

applications needing to fulfil the highest hygienic demands, the WIKA
981.51 diaphragm in-line seal is now available with all process
connections to DIN 11864. In addition to both threaded pipe and flanged
connections, sterile, standard-compliant connections for instruments are
now also realisable in the form of a clamp connection (DIN 11 864-3).
WIKA uses 1.4435 stainless steel as a standard material for wetted
parts. In addition, special materials such as 1.4539 stainless steel or
Hastelloy are also available. The 981.51 diaphragm seal is particularly
suited to applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries as well

Control and Automation company, Gefran SPA. Originally the business,
