Kistler Torque Sensors Test New Jaguar
Steering Column |
| |
Kistler:
Located on the Rassau Industrial Estate at Ebbw Vale, Gwent, ZF Steering
Systems Nacam Ltd (Nacam) manufactures steering columns for most
European passenger car companies, which means that QA is of critical
importance. The thrust of the QA regime has always been to use the best
technology to minimize the possibility of human error compromising
product quality. Naturally, with safety critical components, the primary
objective is to ensure that a component does not fail in service but
there is the secondary consideration of protecting the company’s
well-established reputation for quality and reliability. For a number of
years, Nacam has used Kistler (www.kistler.com) sensors and monitoring
systems in QA applications and the latest is a test rig to ensure that
the screw threads in the universal joints for the new Jaguar XF are
within specification. The test rig, designed by Nacam with technical
assistance from Kistler, uses two Kistler Type 4502 miniature torque
sensors to ... |

Noncontact position sensor exploits FPGA
technology for higher performance |
| |
|
The new ECL202 eddy-current displacement/position sensor has
significantly improved thermal stability and immunity to electromagnetic
interference (EMI) as well as improved linearity and resolution. The
sensor employs FPGA technology enabling complex, proprietary
mathematical algorithms to achieve higher performance levels than purely
analog methods. According to Don Martin, president of Lion Precision,
“Using FPGA digital processing techniques, we can achieve performance
that simply is not possible with discrete analog electronics.” Digital
technology can very precisely detect the sensor’s signal and more easily
differentiate it from other electrical signals present in the sensing
environment. This means the sensor continues to work well in
electrically noisy environments such as near motor controllers or other
high-power switching electronics. Using this same proprietary method,
multiple ECL202 sensors can be positioned near each other without the
mutual interference usually experienced with eddy-current sensors. ... |

Filling Contents in Tanks - Accurate,
digital, battery powered, waterproof |
| |
Under
the name of Castello, Keller AG has introduced a flexible,
modular system for the accurate indication of the content of a liquid in
a tank. Castello offers a user-friendly way to represent the pressure
measurement at the bottom of a tank as the quantity of remaining liquid.
At the push of a button, the microprocessor performs the calculations
using the information of the tank shape and dimensions and displays the
remaining tank content quantity on the clearly legible 5-digit LED
display in the desired unit (litres, gallons etc.). The easy to use
software to configure Castello is free of charge. It contains the most
current tank shapes. Other tank shapes can be easily integrated at the
factory. The exclusive use of absolute pressure sensors in the Castello
system eliminates the use of capillary vented cables with all the
problems associated with a gauge pressure measurement. The Castello
enclosure integrates an air pressure sensor, ranged between 0,8 bar and
1,3 bar absolute. The sensors to measure the hydrostatic pressure at the
bottom of the tank are calibrated from 0,8 to 1,8 bar abs for tanks up
to 5 m in height, and 0,8 to 2,3 bar abs for tanks up to 10 m in height.
The pressure difference, calculated by the μP, is the relative
hydrostatic pressure. ... |

New air bubble detectors for increased
patient safety |
| |
The
new sensors for air bubble detection from SONOTEC, also called
ABD, enable the identification of gas bubbles in flexible tubes or
metering boxes filled with fluids. There are several fields of
application in the medical sector such as dialysis. Here, the sensor is
able to observe the transport of body fluids and to alarm in case of a
failure. Furthermore, the sensors can be applied for blood- and nutrient
transfusions as well as for injectors. The utilisation as an empty/full
detector is another conceivable application for our ABD. The sensors
developed by SONOTEC have no contact with the fluids. The flexible tube
is pressed into the sensor clamp and it does not need a usually required
coupling medium. The procedure is not dependent on the fluid colour. Our
intelligent sensors are very appropriate to the medical technology and
to areas with highly hygienic standards. Even bubbles of a very small
size (until the lower micro-litre range) can be quickly and clearly
detected by our sensors. The ABD has a customised programmable
microcontroller ... |

Melexis introduces Frequency Agile RF
Receiver Chip for AMR and Remote Controls |
| |
|
Melexis launches the MLX71122, the frequency agile version of a
first new highly integrated RF receiver family. This multi channel
receiver IC has been designed for applications in the unlicensed
Industrial-Scientific-Medical (ISM) and Short-Range-Devices (SRD)
frequency bands at 300 to 930 MHz. All multi-channel, multi-band and
frequency-agile low-power RF systems benefit from the receiver’s
programmable PLL. This enables addressing all sub-bands of the European
863 - 870MHz band just by software. Even large frequency jumps across
regionally different bands like the US 315MHz or 915MHz as well as the
European 433MHz are possible without changing the RF hardware.
Manufacturers of world-wide equipment for Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)
and RF remote controls benefit through the simplification of their
production logistics and the indirect reduction in cost. ... |

New sensors for the detection of air- and
gas bubbles in flexible tubes |
| |
With
its intelligent sensors for the detection of air- and gas bubbles in
flexible tubes offers SONOTEC a new series of sensors for the
automation industry. The newly developed procedure provides a quick and
safe identification of bubbles in flexible tubes and metering boxes
filled with liquids. Medical technology and machine- and tool building
are typical fields of application. There is no contact between our newly
developed sensors and the liquids. The flexible tube is pressed into the
sensor clamp and it does not need a usually required coupling medium.
The procedure is not dependent on the liquid colour. Amongst others it
is very suitable for the application in fields with highly hygienic
standards. Our sensors are able to detect quickly and clearly smallest
bubbles even until the lower micro-liter range. They have a user
specific micro-controller so that optional extendable functionalities
such as fail-safe-functions can be integrated. The sensors ... |

executed by ArgonST |
| |
|
San Diego, CA, USA / Enschede, The Netherlands (August 26th, 2008) -
Leading defense contractor ArgonST recently secured a US Government
contract for a new generation of reference motion trackers for use on a
variety of air and ground vehicles. ArgonST selected the MTi-G GPS-aided
Attitude & Heading Reference System (AHRS) from Xsens Technologies
and ordered more than 100 units covering their initial requirement. The
MTi-G addresses the requirement for a low-cost, yet accurate and
reliable orientation tracker with a small footprint. Historically such
reference orientation data is obtained using tactical grade AHRS which
cost proved prohibitive for widespread use. The US Government contract
delivers a product capable of accurate location, attitude, velocity and
acceleration sensing, that provides wireless delivery of this
information to test monitoring locations. This product provides a
measurement capability that surpasses previous systems, operates in
difficult environmental situations and significantly reduces cost. ... |

It's safer than you thought to belt up |
| |
|
Sensor Technology Ltd: Car seatbelts are now proven to be more
reliable than previously thought thanks to a chance discovery by test
rig builder Mindready Solutions in Belfast. When building a replacement
rig for a global seatbelt manufacturer they used a highly sensitive
transducer from Sensor Technology instead of a standard one, which
highlighted previously undetected large torque oscillations within the
spring retractor mechanism. “The oscillations were so massive that at
first we thought there was something wrong with our rig,” recalls
Mindready’s Nick Beckett, “but we went through everything with a fine
toothed comb several times and our results were proven valid. Further
tests on the seatbelts themselves then established that they are
actually more reliable than they were thought to be.” The test rig is
really quite simple. A motor rotates the reel spindle through 15 turns
and back, simulating the extraction and retraction of a standard belt to
its full extent, and the transducer records the changes in torque or
'force curve' throughout the motion. The spring force generated is
expected to ... |
