production of photovoltaic modules for solar panels can now be improved
by using a measuring chain comprising HBM’s digiCLIP amplifier
with a force transducer. Photovoltaic modules use large quantities of
small silicon wafers. These need to be produced in large quantities to
exacting standards. During this process the silicon is normally cut into
wafers using wire saws. Optimal force application of the wire saws on
the silicon is essential to precise cutting and minimal loss of
material. digiCLIP permanently acquires the force signals and transmits
the signals to the production control system through Profibus-DP within
a few milliseconds. During the process digiCLIP evaluates any variations

provides reliable, fit-and-forget position sensing for rugged industrial
applications. The robust SLT190 is aimed primarily at the off-highway
(construction, agriculture) and utility vehicle markets and is suitable
for the harsh conditions of steering position applications, lift
mechanisms, and hydro-pneumatic active suspension systems. This
transducer has a short body to stroke length ratio for compact
dimensions making it ideal as a replacement for existing linear
potentiometers whilst providing a significant cost saving over
equivalent stroke inductive transducers. The SLT190 provides a range of
14 different strokes between 25 and 500 mm. It uses proven inductive
technology, with no electrical sliding contacts, and as a result, has a

conditioning module for any sensor that produces a 0-5Vdc output signal.
The SSC unit, which retails in the UK for less than £35 for OEM
quantities, is housed in an IP68 rated rugged metal enclosure and is
suitable for OEMs wanting to convert sensor output voltage signals to a
4-20mA current signal. The SSC is easy to use and features many options
for a flexible-set up. As a result it suits a variety of applications,
for example transmitting the output signal of a rotary position sensor
linked to a steam valve in a power generating plant, over a long
distance to a control room. SSC reliably converts a sensor’s output
voltage signal to a 4-20mA (or optional 5-19mA) current output, or by
using additional module cards, into a variety of different voltage
formats or a digital pulse width modulated output. The SSC module also
provides a 5Vdc source that may be used as a supply for many types of

GOALIAS – that’s the name of the latest innovation project at the IAS,
the Institute for Automation and Software Engineering at the University
of Stuttgart. Leuze electronic participated in this project as a
cooperation and development partner for the necessary opto-electronic
safety sensor technology. GOALIAS is an automated goalkeeper that can
even stop the penalties of the German premier division club, VfB
Stuttgart. To do this it has to be able to cover the entire 7.32 m wide
and 2.44 m high goal. It has just 400 ms to detect the ball, calculate
the point of impact in the goal, and then get there in time. GOALIAS

devices have a piezo-resistive sense element and the P4050 is available
in pressure ranges of 0-3 through 0-300 psi gage, sealed gage, and
absolute while the P4056 is available in measurement ranges of 0 - 200
mBar through 20 Bar. The rugged, brass sensors are compatible with many
types of liquid and gaseous media. Small in size (40 grams max.), the
P4055/P4056 have a built-in Metri-Pack 150 electrical connector.
Operating on 5 Vdc, the sensors provide a 0.5 to 4.5 Vdc output
